Debtor Electronic Bankruptcy Noticing (DeBN)
The nationwide DeBN program enables debtors to receive court-generated notices and orders from the national Bankruptcy Noticing Center by email PDF attachment rather than in paper through the U.S. Postal Service. The program is voluntary, and debtors can register by completing a consent form and filing it with the bankruptcy clerk’s office. Not all documents related to a debtor’s case are sent via DeBN. Rather, a debtor will only receive those documents, such as notices and orders, he or she would have received by mail anyway
Keep in mind the following:
- Both debtors in a joint bankruptcy must request DeBN activation if both wish to receive electronic noticing. It is alright for one debtor in a joint case to request DeBN noticing while the other does not.
- Registered DeBN users must keep their email address updated with the court and must be certain their email in-boxes are capable of receiving court-generated notices (i.e., inbox not full, spam filters off).
- An unsuccessful email transmission which result in a “bounce back” error message will cause a DeBN account to deactivate and paper mailing of notices with resume.
DeBN requests are accepted at the bankruptcy clerk’s office in person, by mail, or through CM/ECF.
